It's always exciting (and daunting) when you do someone for an event like the Oscars. Red carpet pictures last forever. You're literally making history, and obviously you want that history to be great. In the short term, a look is intensely scrutinized in the few days following the event. The press analyzes every detail. It must be intimidating for anyone who's photographed, because it's stressful even to those of us behind the scenes. Every choice has to be perfect for your client. If the press doesn't like it, they can be brutal: You'll have to see and hear their reviews over and over. For this year's Oscars ceremony it was a pleasure to work with Sandra Bullock. She's smart, low maintenance, hysterically funny and amazingly beautiful. Her skin is flawless, her body looks great in anything, and she has the best lashes ever. I could go on and on. When I learned she had chosen me to do her makeup, I couldn't have been more thrilled. First, it was very flattering. Second, it was a no-brainer. Third, I knew I'd have a blast getting her ready. I played up her eyes with a smoky iridescent bronze MAC eye shadow, added apricot sun-kissed cheeks and a shiny beige mouth. Her makeup was perfectly offset by a white dress from Oscar de la Renta. She looked like she had just returned from a jaunt to St. Tropez. While ultimately it only matters that Sandy is happy, the look was nevertheless a hit with critics. I'm glad I got to play my part. Speaking of hits, she's producing and starring in Miss Congeniality 2, to be released in 2005. And of course the red carpet anxiously awaits her arrival. |
