Billy B. turns back the hands of time to the '60s-an era of social change, groovy music, and most importantly, cool makeup.

In the biz I have the reputation of liking makeup—as if that's a bad thing. Hello, I'm a makeup artist. I'm supposed to like makeup! Don't misunderstand. I like natural, dewy makeup and I can do it with my hands tied behind my back. But I really, really love transformation makeup, and I love using all the tricks of the trade and sharing them with you. I recently did a show for Redken, one of my favorite clients.

The concept was glamour through the ages. The makeup and hair spanned each decade from the '40s to the present. I love them all, but my favorite look is that of the '60s. The casting was genius. The model had all the characteristics of the icons from that era. Think Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy. The makeup of that time ranged from psychedelic face painting to a more daytime look, which was still over the top.

When you think of the '60s, you immediately think of lashes, the defining factor that created the look du jour. The other defining factors are eyebrows, lips, and cheeks. Here's how I make them all work.

EYEBROWS The eyebrows of the '60s were very plucked, if not shaved off. I bleached the model's brows blonde with face cream bleach to make them unimportant, keeping the emphasis on the eyes.

EYES The eye shadow of the moment was usually light at the lid with a heavy crease. Eyes were enhanced with at least top lashes. Some looks included bottom lashes, too. When I do the '60s, I use a single band of lashes on top. I then cut up several different bands of several different styles, ranging from long to short and thick and thin for the bottom. I apply them as you would individual lashes. For me, it's the best way to achieve this random, spiky look.

CHEEKS Cheeks are on the pale side. In this case I used a pale pink blush.

LIPS Lips are the second most important part of achieving this look. They're always pale! Colors can range from white to beige or pink.
